Berber
Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. They are increasing in popularity faster than any other type of carpet. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres providing high durability and a luxurious cushioned effect underfoot. They can be either level loop of multi level loop. The loops can be vulnerable to pulling from pets claws etc.
Level Loop Pile
Level loop pile is made by weaving even loops of yarn into carpet backing at both ends. This type of carpet is very durable and track resistant as well as having a natural, casual appearance even when made from synthetic fibres. Higher loops create a more luxurious appearance. Level loop piles with short and densely packed loops are easy to clean and so offer a good blend between luxury and practicality. This type of carpet is ideal for high traffic areas. The loops can be vulnerable to pulling from pets claws etc.
Multi Level Loop Pile
Multi-level loop pile is like level loop pile except that the loop heights vary (usually two to three different loop heights) creating an informal, random textured appearance. This type of carpet is very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore ideal for high traffic areas and family rooms. The loops can be vulnerable to pulling from pets claws etc.
CUT PILE
The best-selling type of carpet is textured cut pile. Cutting looped carpet fibres at the top creates cut pile with yarn bundles standing straight. Cut pile is less resistant to crushing than other types of carpet.
Saxony carpets are tightly twisted cut piles that are heat-set straight. They consist of two or more fibres twisted together in a yarn. The tips of the fibres remain very distinct, rather than blending together creating a soft texture and elegant finish. Saxonies show every footprint and vacuum-cleaner mark so are ideally suited to more occasional rooms in the home. Choosing a more textured variation will improve the practicality. These carpets have medium durability.
Frieze
Frieze (pronounced free-say) is a highly, tightly twisted cut pile carpet with a dense, low pile surface. Its coarse, pebbly texture is very durable and perfectly suited for high traffic areas. The short fibres tend to curl in different directions at the surface hiding footprints, dust and vacuum marks
Twist
Twisted carpets are one of the most popular types of carpet in the UK. The yarn is tightly twisted to give a defined, textured surface and heat set. The result is a versatile finish that is extremely hard wearing and less likely to show footprints or vacuum marks. Twist carpets are ideal for plain colours.
You can extend your upholstered furniture’s life by periodically turning over the loose cushions. Yet this easy maintenance method allows for an even distribution of wear and tear and your cushions won’t develop indentations right away. Caring for cushions by fluffing them after you’ve cleaned also helps keep them in shape.
Change the cushions around from one part to the other in addition to turning them over. Some seats get more usage than others, so changing cushions around will ensure even usage.
Vacuum your upholstered furniture weekly for general cleaning and to remove surface soil. This also prevents dirt from becoming embedded into the fibers.
You can also use a brush to gently whisk the dirt away. Make sure to always use a soft bristled brush so that you don't snag the fabric.
While regular care does a lot for your upholstered furniture's maintenance, accidents will happen. Blot any spills immediately with a clean folded towel: never rub, but blot gently. Sometimes this is enough to get rid of the stain completely, especially if the fabric has been pre-treated with a fabric protector.
Always test in an inconspicuous area before you use any product for spot cleaning, and check the manufacturer's instructions to see if you need a water based or solvent based cleaner. It is best to use a mild cleaning product. Apply with a soft brush in a circular motion to work into the fibers, then vacuum when dry.
Too much sun can damage your upholstery fabric, causing it to fade and even fray. Try to position it so that it doesn’t sit in the sun for extended periods of time. This is especially true for silks or other delicate fabrics.
Airborne pollutants such as fumes from cooking or smoke can also harm your fabric. It isn’t always easy to avoid that from happening, however, proper ventilation can help. It can also help with odor control, as upholstered furniture can easily absorb odors.
It is best to have a professional clean your upholstered furniture every couple of years or so. Experts recommend having this done on a regular basis and not wait for it to get visibly dirty. The dirtier a sofa or chair becomes, the harder it is to restore to its original glory.

it comes to carpet cleaning, chances are there is a lot to learn. The average home owner or renter has little understanding of how to keep a carpet looking clean and fresh – nor the dangers and dirt lurking in the fibres of your carpet. Learn how to deal with carpet cleaning and care problems with these great tips.
Use doormats. The humble doormat does wonders to reduce the amount of sand and dirt tracked into the home. Invest a few dollars in doormats to expand the life of your carpet and keep it clean longer.
Clean spots and spills immediately. Not only will a quick clean reduce the rate of absorption but it also helps reduce the bacteria and other problems associated with a spill.
Avoid the hype. A lot of products on the market claim to remove stains, spills and odours but simply mask them or drive them deeper. The stains eventually re-appear looking worse than ever. Don’t spend your hard earned money on inferior products when for just a little more money you can have your carpets professionally cleaned with top quality products.
Use deep extraction. Deep carpet cleaning is essential to remove deep set dirt, dust, pollen, and other pollutants but don’t add to the problem by allowing the use of harmful chemicals. Instead, search for a company that uses environmentally friendly “green” carpet cleaning solutions.
Deodorise. Even when a carpet looks clean it can harbour harmful bacteria that give off unpleasant odours. Ask about enzymatic cleaning products capable of eliminating – not masking – odours.
Grooming your carpet. Over time carpets tends to become impacted due to constant traffic and dirt so it is a good idea to have the carpet raked and groomed after a deep cleaning. You might be surprised to find out how good your carpet looks after it has been professionally cleaned and groomed
